Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) Lab
Two apparatus for SEM imaging are available: JEOL JSM 848 and a field emission JEOL 6400F (FEG-SEM), equipped with a Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX - Oxford) microprobe for the elemental analysis of the sample surface. The first instrument is also equipped with a tool for Electron Beam Lithography (EBL) (ELPHY Quantum- Raith) for directly writing micro-patterns and for producing micro-devices.
In the SEM laboratory is installed a Magnetic Field Cancelling System (SC20- Spicer Consulting) which significantly improve the quality of images. Both microscopes can acquire digital images.
Recently the laboratory has acquired Quantomix capsules which allow the acquisition images of wet samples, i.e. no usual preparation procedure for biological sample are necessary.
